Community Activism
During the past three decades our community center has evolved into a place where people who support environmental justice and human dignity work together to inform the public, bring about change, and advance policies at the local, state, and national levels to improve the quality-of-life for all human beings, which are fully inclusive of the millions of refugees and immigrant workers who come to the United States of America seeking a better life.
We work to bring about economic, environmental and legal fairness throughout all aspects of a modern society that would be fully inclusive of an immigrant population who works hard, pays taxes, and collectively spends billions of dollars each year purchasing goods and services, thereby stimulating the economy while making significant contributions to our common prosperity.
Comité Pro Uno is a community-based environmental justice organization headquartered in Maywood, California, working at the intersection of environmental justice, immigration, and equity for residents of the numerous industrialized cities throughout the southeast Los Angeles region.
Starting in September of 2018, the Coalition for Clean Air and Comité Pro Uno, with the support of the California Air Resources Board assessed air quality and public health in this Southeast Los Angeles DTSC Lead Cleanup Area community.

Residents of Southeast Los Angeles conducted truck count studies, air quality monitoring, and community health surveys in both English and Spanish to understand the risks residents face and develop ways to reduce these risks.

Air quality monitors found many toxic pollutants in the air while community health surveys indicated high levels of concern and chronic health issues in this Southeast Los Angeles DTSC Lead Cleanup Area community.

Southeast Los Angeles had the highest truck counts of the three Greater Los Angeles study areas. Highlighting the impact of vehicle emissions on health in the community. Overall, 77% of residents expressed concern about pollution from nearby truck traffic.

Providing continuous services to Maywood residents for approximately 30 years. The Coalition for Clean Air has long fought for cleaner cars and trucks traveling the I-710 freeway and for the reduction of toxic air contaminant emissions in Maywood and other Southeast Los Angeles communities.
Comité Pro Uno served as the lead for project activities in the Southeast Los Angeles study area.
