The State of California is proposing to adopt more protective air standards for two very toxic air contaminants:

Ethylene Oxide and Acrolein.

The State of California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and the California Air Resources Board are planning a series of workshops and opening a public comment portal to solicit input from the public on the toxicity of Ethylene Oxide and Acrolein.

Ethylene Oxide is mainly emitted at sterilizers and hospitals during the process of sterilizing medical equipment and Acrolein is a combustion byproduct emitted at large stationary sources of air pollution like refineries, power plants, and cement kilns, as well as by cars, trucks, and airplanes. These chemicals are very toxic acting mainly as respiratory toxins and are Cancer-causing.

Community groups affected by these sources in Los Angeles are planning to hold a short tour of some of the sources of these chemicals and an informal workshop / public availability session:

LOCATION: 4030 E. SLAUSON AVE., MAYWOOD, CA 90270

The tour will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Maywood and will include chrome platers, a sterilizer, the former Exide lead smelter, and public buildings affected by toxic chemical releases. The public is invited to attend both the tour and the informal workshop.
